Import Restrictions

An import permit is required for many goods. Before posting any item, senders should confirm that the addressee has any necessary permit. Senders should determine import restrictions from the country's authorities before posting:

  • alcohol and spirits
  • animals and animal products
  • apiary products
  • ceramic goods
  • crash (motorcycle) helmets
  • glass and glassware
  • plants and plant products
  • pharmaceutical products
  • paper and paperboard products
  • meat and meat products
  • raw hides and skins
  • tobacco
  • wood and wood products.

Prohibited Items

In addition to items considered non-mailable matter, the following are prohibited:

  • artificial sweetners
  • bakery and pastry equipment
  • batteries
  • bank notes, currency notes, or securities
  • confectionery in the form of cigarettes
  • clocks and watches, parts
  • drugs, non-prescription
  • electric water heaters
  • fruit (oranges, tangerines, lemons, limes, grapefruit)
  • footwear
  • gold
  • items contrary to the social or moral order of the State
  • ivory and tortoise shells
  • infant formula
  • indecent, immoral or seditious articles
  • live animals
  • musical instruments
  • metals and mineral products
  • milk (fresh, liquid)

  • newspapers, printed books, and brochures
  • oils (sunflower, coconut, soyabean)
  • public transport vehicles

Documentation Required

Information regarding Customs can be found in "Customs Requirements" of the Canada Postal Guide.

In addition, commercial goods mailed to Mauritius require an invoice showing the value of the goods in Canadian dollars. Commercial goods require a Certificate of Origin.

Senders should also include the addresse's telephone number (if available), in addition to the complete delivery address on the Customs Declaration.

5. Certificate of Origin

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Consumer Protection is responsible for the control of products that require import permits. A commercial invoice is required to support customs declaration for an item being sent from a company to company or an individual.
